A bit of background:
24% of municipal waste in the US comes from food. Food waste that goes to a landfill (vs being burned) makes up 60% of methane emissions from landfills. Reducing methane emissions is the fastest way to curb short-term global warming.
Additionally, most waste in Delaware County is burned at a Covanta-owned plant in Chester. Air quality problems in Chester from facilities like Covanta have led to higher rates of health problems for those living there. It's not fair to let our waste impact the community of Chester. We can help improve Chester's air quality by reducing the amount of food and yard waste that we put in our garbage.
